CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The flight from Charleston to New York was uneventful, except for the part where Maggie’s suitcase was about fifteen pounds overweight. When Nicole had found out, she’d lamented that they hadn’t sent down the private jet. “You could carry on a baby elephant, and no one would even care,” she explained. Maggie tried to act unimpressed, but secretly, the thought that they could have taken a fancy private plane made her hate the toddler who kept kicking the seat behind her just a little bit more. Of course, she didn’t let the irritation show on her face. Her momma always said to be gracious to parents with small children. They were operating on way too little sleep.

Maggie had visited New York once on a class trip, but rolling around in a coach bus was much different than the chauffeured car they were in now. She had been kind of hoping that AJ would ride with them in the car, but he and the rest of the Crashbang boys had a suite at The Bowery while Maggie was going to stay at the Carrington penthouse with Nicole.

“Okay, so I have to warn you about something.” Nicole had spent most of the car ride asking Maggie to contrast Miss Congeniality with actual beauty pageants, but now her voice sounded a lot more serious. “There will probably be a lot of people when we get there. Like, a lot. And it will probably be overwhelming and terrible.”

“What, like fans?” Maggie asked, suddenly a little bit excited. There was nothing she liked better than a crowd of adoring fans. Granted, these days, all her fans were her 4,234 Pinterest followers, but last year, the list would have included basically the entire high school. Oh, how the mighty had fallen. At least they let her sit with them at lunch now.

“Yeah, sometimes. But, they’re not really the worst part. It’s the paparazzi. Just keep your head down and run in, and you’ll be fine.” Nicole looked a lot more tense than she had a few seconds ago. Her fingers ran through Tristan’s hair like she was trying to soothe herself. The minute the car had pulled away from the airport, he’d put his head in her lap and went to sleep. Apparently, the most handsome man she’d ever seen in real life continued to be the most handsome man she’d ever seen in real life while he slept. Maggie, on the other hand, knew she was an ugly sleeper and refused to fall asleep in public.

Sure enough, as the car pulled up to a beautiful brick building across the street from Central Park, Maggie could see a mass of people clutching cameras. As they rolled to a stop, the mass came alive, pushing for position.

Nicole shook Tristan awake, and as he tried to smooth his hair back down, the driver came around to open their door. Two large men emerged from the car behind them and began to clear space up to the glass lobby doors.
